Summer camp registration is open!


From single-day activities at Camp Hale to overnight wilderness trips in the White River National Forest, your child will develop an appreciation for our very own backyard as they learn to navigate and conquer the great outdoors. Each camp is designed to help build necessary skills and knowledge of the outdoors for kids to safely and properly recreate on their own.

2021 Summer Explorer Camps

  • Day Camps

    Backyard Adventure Day Camp: 

    Session One: June 7-10 SOLD OUT
    Session Two: June 21-24 SOLD OUT

    Session Four: July 26-29 SOLD OUT
    Session Five: August 9-12 SOLD OUT

    We’re excited to offer multi-adventure day camps to explore our own backyard. Participants will be exposed to a variety of activities that may include hiking, climbing, stand-up paddleboarding, educational activities at Sylvan Lake State Park and the team-building course at Maloit Park. Activities vary per week and are dependent on weather and conditions.

    Climbing Camp

    Session One: June 14-17 (Gypsum) SOLD OUT
    Session Two: July 19-22 (Edwards) SOLD OUT

    Learn to make your way confidently up the famous rock faces of Camp Hale! The Mountain Recreation climbing camp is a great introduction to rock climbing. This camp will introduce and teach standard rock climbing techniques such as knots, belaying, and the correct way to move over rock. After three days of introduction at one of the mountain recreation indoor climbing walls, youth will put their skills to the test on real rock at various top rope climbing sites in the Camp Hale area.

    Stand Up Paddle (SUP) Camp

    July 19-21

    This 3-day camp delivered in partnership with Stand Up Paddle Colorado is designed for youth who want a basic introduction to stand up paddle boarding some of the best water in the area. Campers will focus on paddling skills, communication, and whitewater safety as they learn the fundamentals of navigating through thrilling rapids. The camp will start out on calm lake waters allowing youth to practice basic SUP paddling, progressing from basic paddling on the lake to the thrilling whitewater of the Upper Colorado River.

  • Overnight Camps

    Advanced Backpacking: 

    June 22-25

    Explore some of the most beautiful areas of the White River National Forest in Eagle County over a week. Campers will travel through montane and subalpine forests, through flower-filled high alpine meadows, and over rocky ridgelines, traveling between 3-8 Miles per day carrying all necessary camping gear and food. Over the course of the adventure, campers will learn backcountry cooking, travel, and camping skills and also learn about the local wildlife and ecology as well as focus on outdoor leadership skills for the duration of the trip while camping at a variety of backcountry sites. Depending on the group and weather, youth may have an opportunity to try a peak ascent on one of the peaks in the area. Locations include the Holy Cross Wilderness Area (Missouri Lake and Fancy Lakes) or the Flat Tops Wilderness Area (Turret Creek).

    Intro to Backpacking:

    Session Three: August 11-13 (12-15 yrs)

    For this adventure, campers will embark on a 3-day adventure into the Holy Cross Wilderness carrying everything needed for 2 nights in the woods on their back! This trip will introduce many new skills to campers such as packing for a wilderness trip, backcountry camping skills, and how to travel through the backcountry. Campers will spend one night at a front country site, practicing these skills before hiking through the beautiful Cross Creek Drainage with amazing views of Mt. of the Holy Cross. For kids ages 9-15.

    Discover what the excitement is all about! On this 3-day adventure, campers will begin to learn backcountry travel and camping skills all while enjoying the rewards of hiking and the thrills of rock climbing. With the comfort of a stationary base camp, youth will spend two nights camping in the White River National Forest, learning what it takes to sleep in the woods! After days out recreating they’ll return to camp for nights of stargazing and storytelling. Each day young explorers will learn the skills they need to move across the landscape, find their way, and sleep in safety. From the basics of camp setup to outdoor cooking to teambuilding to playing in wilderness to building friendships, this multi-day course allows youth to become pioneers in their pursuits as outdoor enthusiasts. This course is designed to introduce the beginner to outdoor recreation and camping and to enhance skills already learned. For kids ages 9-15.
