Feed your kids’ natural hunger of curiosity and desire to explore. New to our repertoire are Explorer Camps! Each camp is designed to help build necessary skills and knowledge of the outdoors for kids to safely and properly recreate on their own.

From single-day activities at Camp Hale to 5-day wilderness trips in the White River National Forest, your child will develop an appreciation for our very own backyard as they learn to navigate and conquer the great outdoors.

2019 Explorer Camps

  • Backyard Adventure Day CampsDay Trips

    These day camps are designed to unearth your child’s passion by offering an introduction to various outdoor adventure sport opportunities readily available in our own backyard. Kids will build necessary skills and knowledge to safely and properly recreate on their own, with enriching connections to nature and new adventurous friends.

     

    H20 Camp

    August 12-14 (9am-4pm)

    This 3-day camp delivered in partnership with Stand Up Paddle Colorado is designed for youth who want a basic introduction to stand up paddle boarding some of the best water in the area. Campers will focus on paddling skills, communication, and whitewater safety as they learn the fundamentals of navigating through thrilling rapids. The camp will start out on calm lake waters allowing youth to practice basic SUP paddling, progressing from basic paddling on the lake to the thrilling whitewater of the Upper Colorado River. For kids ages 12-15.

    Price: $230
    Location: Program leaves from and returns to the Edwards Field House. Campers will travel to Nottingham Lake & the Upper Colorado River

    Adventure Day Camp: 

    Session One: June 17-19 (9am-4pm)
    Session Two: July 8-10 (9am-4pm)
    Session Three: July 29-31 (9am-4pm)

    Mountain Rec is excited to offer multi-adventure day camps to explore our own backyard.  Participants will be exposed to a variety of activities including hiking, climbing, stand-up paddleboarding, and mountain biking.  Activities vary per week. For kids ages 7-12.

    Price: $125
    Location: Campers will travel to various locations around the area including Camp Hale and the White River National Forest.  Some activities are run by SOS Outreach

    Climbing Camp: 

    Edwards: July 24th-26th (9am-3pm)
    Gypsum: August 5th-7th (9am-3pm)

    Learn to make your way confidently up the famous rock faces of Camp Hale! The Mountain Recreation climbing camp is a great introduction to rock climbing. This camp will introduce and teach standard rock climbing techniques such as knots, belaying, and the correct way to move over rock. After a day of introduction at one of the mountain recreation indoor climbing walls, youth will put their skills to the test on real rock at various top rope climbing sites in the Camp Hale area. SOS Outreach will be running the outdoor portion of this camp. For kids ages 9-15.

    Price: $125
    Location: Edwards Climbing Camp will meet at the Edwards Field House.
    Gypsum Climbing Camp will meet at the Gypsum Rec Center.

  • SOS Outreach Wilderness CampsOvernight Trips

    These multi-day overnight camps concentrate on teaching the fundamentals of backcountry navigation and camping skills. From the basics of camp setup to outdoor cooking to team building, kids will build lasting friendships as they become more comfortable with the outdoors.

    Overnight camps leave at 9am from the Edwards Field House and return to the Edwards Field House at 4pm.

     

    Overnight: Intro to Camping: 

    Session One:  June 19-21
    Session Two: July 1-3
    Session Three: August 5-7

    Discover what the excitement is all about! On this 3 day adventure, students will begin to learn backcountry travel and camping skills all while enjoying the rewards of hiking and the thrills of rock climbing. With the comfort of a stationary base camp, youth will spend two nights camping in the White River National Forest, learning what it takes to sleep in the woods! After days out recreating they’ll return to camp for nights of stargazing and storytelling. Each day young explorers will learn the skills they need to move across the landscape, find their way, and sleep in safety. From the basics of camp setup to outdoor cooking to teambuilding to playing in wilderness to building friendships, this multi-day course allows youth to become pioneers in their pursuits as outdoor enthusiasts. This course is designed to introduce the beginner to outdoor recreation and camping and to enhance skills already learned. For kids ages 9-13.

    Overnight: Intro to Backpacking: 

    Session One: June 24-26
    Session Two: July 8-10
    Session Three: August 7-9

    For this adventure, students will embark on a 3-day adventure into the Holy Cross Wilderness carrying everything needed for 2 nights in the woods on their back! This trip will introduce many new skills to students such as packing for a wilderness trip, backcountry camping skills, and how to travel through the backcountry. Students will spend one night at a front country site, practicing these skills before hiking through the beautiful Cross Creek Drainage with amazing views of Mt. of the Holy Cross. For kids ages 9-13.

    Overnight: Flat Tops Backpacking (5-days)

    July 15-19

    Explore some of the most beautiful areas of the White River National Forest in Eagle County over a week. Students will travel through montane and sub-alpine forests, through flower-filled high alpine meadows, and over rocky ridgelines, traveling between 3-8 Miles per day carrying all necessary camping gear and food. Over the course of the adventure, students will learn backcountry cooking, travel, and camping skills and also learn about the local wildlife and ecology as well as focus on outdoor leadership skills for the duration of the trip while camping at a variety of backcountry sites. Depending on the group and weather, youth may have an opportunity to try a peak ascent on one of the peaks in the area. Locations include the Holy Cross Wilderness Area (Missouri Lake and Fancy Lakes) or the Flat Tops Wilderness Area (Turret Creek). For kids ages 14-17.

    Overnight: Multi-Sport Adventure

    Session One: July 15-19
    Session Two: July 29-Aug 2

    On this 5 day adventure, students will explore the various adventure sports available in beautiful Eagle County all while base camping in the historic Camp Hale area. The trip will begin with the excitement of Stand Up Paddle boarding and/or Mountain Biking and an opportunity to get to know the rest of the students on the adventure. The group will then spend the next 4 nights camping near historic Camp Hale and enjoying the reward of hiking in the White River National Forest, the thrill of rock climbing, and excitement of learning camping skills. For kids ages 14-17.

    Session One: July 22-26 (Ages 14-17)
    Session Two: July 29-Aug 2 (Ages 11-13)
