Celebrate Active Aging Week October 5-9 at the Edwards Field House and Gypsum Rec Center for a week of free activities and resources from Mountain Recreation and community partners. Explore the special schedules below and discover programs designed to help you live a healthy, happy life.

Edwards Field House Schedule

  • Monday, October 5

    Move It! | 10:30 a.m.

    • Join instructor Jodie Oleson from Avon Rec to Keep your body and mind active, using various equipment like balls, straps, chairs, and body movements. “Motion is lotion!” Stretch, movement & breathing will be required!

      Since Avon Recreation Center will be closed for annual maintenance this week, we’re bringing their regularly scheduled fitness class to the Edwards Field House in conjunction with our Active Aging Week so patrons don’t have to miss a beat.   The class will be held at its regularly scheduled time and will also be open for drop-in participation. This is a great opportunity to try the fitness class offered by our neighbor, Avon Recreation Center while enjoying our Edwards facility. Max capacity will be 20 participants, first come first serve.

  • Wednesday, October 7

    Acudetox | 10:00 – 11:15 a.m.

    • Acudetox is a simple 5 needle point acupuncture protocol done on the ears that helps reduce stress, regulate emotions, and improve sleep. Acudetox will be done in a community setting where multiple participants will be getting treatment simultaneously. Ideal treatment ranges from 20 to 40mins, however, you’ll have the autonomity to decide how long you want to stay. All are welcomed to experience this form of treatment to help promote your well-being!

     

    Wellness with Nicole | 11:30 a.m.

    •  Join Nicole Timmerman massage therapist and wellness coach to discover simple practices to support vitality, build energy, and feel your best as you age through mindfulness, breath and movement.
  • Thursday, October 8

    Nature Walk at Eagle River Preserve | 10:00 a.m.

    • Explore the beauty of Eagle River Preserve on a guided nature walk led by Denyse Schrenker, Agriculture & Natural Resource Specialist. Discover local plants, wildlife, and natural resources along the way.

     

    Medicare Essentials | 12:30 p.m.

    • Get the facts and expert advice from SHIP and Vintage Services for Aging. Jonnah Glassman local Medicare State Health Insurance Program Coordinator will cover the basics, compare plans and answer questions to prepare you for open enrollment October 15- November 7.
  • Friday, October 9

    Pickleball Demo/Drop-In | 2 p.m.

    • Check out our new courts and give pickleball a try before winter arrives. Stop by for some casual drop-in play and see what all the fun is about. An instructor may be available to offer tips and guidance, depending on availability.

Gypsum Recreation Center Schedule

  • Monday, October 5

    Walking Group | 11 a.m. – Noon

      • Led by Lucia Yeo
      • Join Lucia for a gentle walk around Gypsum. We’ll keep an easy pace and enjoy some movement and conversation along the way.

     

    Beginner-Friendly Tai Chi Workshop | Noon – 1 p.m.

      • Led by Erik Johnson
      • Try Tai Chi, a beginner-friendly class that can help improve balance, body mechanics, energy, and stamina. Class will begin with a warm-up, followed by Qigong exercises and several movements inspired by Yang-style Tai Chi. No previous Tai Chi experience is needed.
  • Tuesday, October 6

    Drop-In Cards, Games, and Conversation | 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

      • Led by Lauren Saunders
      • Stop by for cards, board games, and conversation. This is a casual, welcoming space to play a game, meet new people, and spend some time together.

     

    Sound Bath & Journaling Workshop | 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.

      • Led by Jenna Meenach
      • Experience deep relaxation through the soothing sounds and vibrations of crystal singing bowls and other calming instruments. The sound bath is designed to help reduce stress, quiet the mind, and leave you feeling refreshed and restored. The class will also include guided journaling prompts. Journals will be provided.
  • Wednesday, October 7

    Pop-Up Water Aerobics Class | 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.

      • Led by Andrea Foster
      • Try out water aerobics during this special class outside of our normal class schedule. This shallow-water, low-intensity workout uses water and equipment for resistance to help tone muscles and increase endurance and flexibility.

     

    Seated & Strong Fitness Class | 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

      • Led by Roseanne Cassidy
      • This all-abilities fitness class is focused mostly on exercises that can be done while seated. It’s gentle and approachable while still providing a great workout.
  • Thursday, October 8

    Tea with a PT | 9:20 – 10 a.m.

      • Led by Krystal Schlegel, Physical Therapist with Howard Head Sports Medicine
      • Join Krystal for a conversation about brain and balance care, why falls are a concern as we age, and ways to maintain physical fitness and independence. The session will include a short presentation followed by time to go over exercises you can use to support balance and strength.
      • Free tea will be provided by R3 Café.

     

    Still Got It! | 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

      • Led by Mike Graff
      • Test your skills with a multi-station obstacle course based on everyday movements, including sit to stands, balance, grip strength, and more. Learn how each activity connects to staying active and independent. You’ll track your results and leave with simple goals and exercises to keep improving your strength, balance, mobility, and endurance.
  • Friday, October 9

      • Led by Stephanie Xavier
      • Acudetox is a simple five-point acupuncture protocol done on the ears that can help reduce stress, regulate emotions, and improve sleep. Acudetox will be offered in a community setting, with multiple participants receiving treatment at the same time. Treatment typically lasts 20–40 minutes, but you can decide how long you would like to stay. Everyone is welcome to stop by and experience this form of treatment.

     

    Beginner-Friendly Pickleball Demo | Noon – 1pm

      • Led by Robin and Jerry Santoro
      • Join us for a drop in, beginner friendly pickleball demo. Learn the basics, ask questions, and give the game a try. No previous experience is needed.
