Steph Hovater
Outdoor Recreation Coordinator
Taipei, Taiwan
BA Therapeutic Use of Adventure Education, Minor in Environmental Science Prescott College, AZ
Born and raised near the sea cliffs of Taipei, Taiwan - Steph fostered a love for people, culture and exploration. Steph’s upbringing taught him the importance of human connection. He values human differences, has a deep appreciation for community, and invests in structuring spaces that amplify learning and growth. In 2010, he officially moved to the United States where he was introduced to rock climbing. Steph’s passion for climbing eventually led him to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Adventure Education. Once he finished, Steph invested his time in helping others get outside. He guided canyons near Zion National Park, rock guided throughout Arizona, and ran extensive backpacking trips to help others connect with the natural world. In 2019, Steph took a job as an adjunct professor at Prescott College where he taught outdoor education courses and helped amplify the college’s climbing program. Today, through Steph’s combined experiences, he looks forward to working closely with beginners to advanced outdoor enthusiasts to create spaces where we can grow together and build a stronger outdoor community.

So excited to be back in the mountains after spending several years in Denver. I love getting outside year-round but I especially love the snow and all things winter. When the snow is not falling I typically have a camera in my hands or I am biking, hiking and discovering new spots to camp.

Christina Hovater
Aquatics Supervisor
Raleigh, NC
Bachelor of Arts/Exercise Science at Simpson College in Indianola, IA
I started as a competitive swimmer from age three through Junior year of college and fell into lifeguarding (naturally). After college, I landed my first Aquatics Coordinator role with City of Des Moines Parks and Rec where I oversaw five pools with 150 staff. I then became an Aquatics Manager with LifeTime Fitness in Des Moines and developed a leadership team to grow the aquatics swim programs there. Afterwards, I moved west to follow my love of the outdoors and worked an Aquatics Coordinator for City of Mesa Parks and Rec. During my time with Mesa, I met my husband and wanted to continue our love of the outdoors together, and found Mountain Recreation!

Bachelors in Piano Performance: University of Nebraska, Masters in Music: Butler University (Indianapolis, IN)
I am a graduate of the 5 university, 8 major, 13 year program. My Dad says (sarcastically) that I should absolutely be a Doctor, by this point. At least I was able to earn a Bachelors degree in Piano Performance, as well as a Masters Degree in Music. Along the way I also studied, Oil Painting, Theater and Sound Design, Engineering, Anthropology, Sociology and Broadcasting. When I was in my early twenties, I was a lifeguard at one of the Easter Seals’ summer camps (for the disabled) - at a location called Rocky Mountain Village, in Empire, CO. Over the past 20 years, I’ve spent at least a decade living in different valleys between Gypsum and Vail. I’m a mountain lover, through and through. I’m very happy to be back in Gypsum, and I’m both excited and grateful to now be part of the Mountain Rec family.
