Edwards, CO – Mountain Recreation is excited to share that it will be fully replacing the indoor turf at the Edwards Field House. The project is scheduled to begin on July 29 and is expected to be completed by August 9, ensuring a fresh, high-quality playing surface and no more crumb rubber.

This significant upgrade marks the end of the current turf’s 15-year lifespan, since it was originally installed when the Edwards Field House was built in 2009. To date, the 15,000 square-foot turf has provided a safe space year-round for countless District offerings and rentals by local non-profits, government agencies, and others for special events, tournaments, workshops, camps, and more.

To get further use out of the original turf, Mountain Rec will be donating the turf to the Eagle County Animal Shelter for use in their outdoor play areas at their facility in Eagle.

The project was approved earlier this year by the Mountain Rec Board at their March board meeting, allowing staff to contract the services of Turf Solutions Group (TSG) of Illinois. TSG will handle removing the original turf and installing the new turf and padding system. The end of July was chosen as the target date for the replacement, to minimize disruptions to programs and facility access.

During the request for proposals process, Mountain Rec received multiple bids from local and out of state agencies, ultimately selecting TSG for their expertise and proven track record – having collaborated with some of the largest recreation providers across the country and notably the Air Force Academy.

The new turf promises an improved playing experience, with a natural grass feel for more natural play. The fine sand infill used in the new turf will replace the traditional crumb rubber, significantly reducing spillage and simplifying weekly maintenance for staff. Additionally, the turf will feature a foam padding system underneath, enhancing impact absorption and promoting safer play.

Mountain Rec is committed to delivering the best possible facilities for the community and is confident the upgraded turf will provide a safer, more enjoyable experience.
