The month of May celebrates Older Americans Month, and what a great opportunity to highlight the importance of healthy aging for everyone. Aging is a natural part of life, but how we age can make all the difference. Healthy aging isn’t just about avoiding illness; it’s about staying active, connected, and engaged in ways that support both physical and mental well-being.

At Mountain Recreation, our facilities are much more than places to exercise, they are community gathering spaces where individuals of all ages can access programs designed to promote movement, learning, and social connection. For older adults in particular, these spaces provide opportunities to maintain independence, build friendships, and improve overall quality of life.

This impact is made even stronger through the collaborative relationships we share with community partners throughout the district. By working together toward a common goal supporting the health and well-being of our guests, we’re able to expand opportunities, share resources, and create a more connected and supportive environment for older adults. Partnerships with organizations such as Eagle County Healthy Aging, Vail Health, and many others help strengthen our collective impact and ensure that older adults across the valley have access to the programs, services, and connections they need to thrive.

Regular physical activity is one of the cornerstones of healthy aging. Activities like low-impact fitness classes, swimming, yoga, and walking groups help improve balance, strength, and flexibility, reducing the risk of falls and chronic disease. Just as important, however, are the mental and emotional benefits that come with staying active.

Connection plays a vital role as well. Loneliness and social isolation are significant concerns as people age, and they can have serious impacts on overall health. Whether it’s a group class, a workshop, or a community event, these interactions encourage a sense of belonging and purpose. Participants often report that the friendships they build through recreation programs are just as valuable as the activities themselves, a simple weekly class can grow into a meaningful support network.

Healthy aging also means continuing to grow. That’s why Mountain Recreation offers a wide variety of programming throughout the year designed to support both body and mind. From book clubs and mindfulness sessions to painting classes, gardening programs, educational lectures, and pickleball, there’s truly something for everyone no matter your interests or experience level.

Join us for the upcoming Wellness & Wisdom: Senior Expo for Healthy Aging in collaboration with Vail Health, Eagle County Healthy Aging and Howard Head Sports Medicine on Friday, May 8 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Edwards Field House. Enjoy free health resources and screenings (8:30–11 a.m.) and a free keynote speaker (11 a.m. to noon).

Staying mentally stimulated has been linked to better cognitive health, improved mood, and a greater sense of independence. Together, through movement, connection, and community collaboration, we can support healthier, more vibrant lives at every age.
