Celebrating Community Through Recreation

Mountain Recreation is honored to receive the Excellence in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Award at the Vail Valley Partnership’s 23rd Annual Success Awards, held May 14 at the EagleVail Pavilion. We are grateful for this recognition alongside so many inspiring businesses, nonprofits and organizations that work every day to strengthen the Vail Valley community.
We extend our congratulations to all award winners, finalists and nominees. Every organization recognized this year reflects something special about our valley: innovation, compassion, resilience, leadership and a commitment to making our community stronger. Whether serving families, supporting local businesses, creating opportunities for youth, improving health and wellness or fostering belonging, each organization contributes to what makes Eagle County such an extraordinary place to live and work.
At Mountain Recreation, our mission is simple but meaningful: Mountain Recreation provides quality recreational facilities and programs so everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy and happy life.
The word “everyone” has always mattered.
Receiving an award focused on diversity, equity and inclusion is meaningful because it reinforces that recreation is about more than facilities, programs or activities. Recreation is about people. It is about creating spaces where individuals and families feel welcomed, represented, supported and empowered to participate fully in community life.
As a public organization, our role is unique. Government entities are often viewed through the lens of operations, infrastructure, services and policies. Those things are important and essential to serving communities effectively. Public organizations also have an opportunity and a responsibility to create environments where access and belonging are considered alongside service delivery.
Equity is not separate from our mission. It is part of fulfilling it.
That can mean ensuring cost does not prevent a child from participating in a program through scholarships. It can mean offering bilingual opportunities so language is not a barrier. It can mean creating spaces where someone feels comfortable trying a new activity for the first time. It can also mean listening to community needs and asking not only who is participating, but who may still be missing.

Over the past year, Mountain Recreation continued expanding programs and partnerships that support these goals. From youth scholarships and free community events to bilingual programming and affinity-based recreation opportunities, we have worked to broaden access and create welcoming experiences for community members. These efforts are not the result of one individual or one department. They represent the collective work of staff members across the organization who show up every day with compassion and purpose.
This recognition also belongs to our community partners, whose collaboration and trust help make this work possible. Meaningful progress rarely happens in isolation. It happens through partnerships, conversations, shared learning and a willingness to continue evolving.
Most importantly, this award belongs to the people we serve: the child who gains confidence through a new experience, the family who discovers connection through recreation and the individual who feels welcomed into a space where they can simply be themselves.
Awards are milestones, but they are not finish lines.
Receiving this recognition encourages us to continue learning, continue listening and continue asking how we can better serve every member of our community. When recreation is accessible and welcoming, it becomes more than a program or facility. It becomes a place where people connect, grow and thrive.
Thank you to the Vail Valley Partnership for this honor, and congratulations again to all of this year’s nominees and winners. Together, you are helping shape the kind of community we are proud to call home.
