THE young professional of the year: Eddie Campos

It was 15 months ago that life changed as we knew it. As the entire world was figuring out how to handle the COVID-19 pandemic, our community was no different. In times of crisis, natural leaders rise to the occasion. Eduardo ‘Eddie’ Campos is one of those natural leaders which is exactly why he won the 2020 Vail Valley Partnership Young Professional of the Year.

Some might wonder how a Marketing & Communication Manager for Mountain Recreation played a role in our community’s response to the pandemic and the answer is short and sweet: because he is really good at his profession.

I remember it like it was yesterday. It was March 13th the first day all of Mountain Recreation’s programs and facilities shut down. I was walking through an eerily quiet Gypsum Rec Center and Angelo Fernandez, Deputy County Manager for Eagle County called me. They needed Eddie’s help reaching the Latino population with life-saving information regarding the pandemic. I told him, if Eddie is up for it, then we’re OK with it too. Why? Because we believe everybody deserves to be healthy and happy.

Just like that, Eddie hit the ground running. For three months he temporarily left Mountain Rec and worked full-time out of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Eddie coordinated with 70+ community partners, conducted media buys, developed bicultural and bilingual messaging, managed public relations, and acted as a trusted spokesperson by engaging with local and statewide networks (including Telemundo and Univision). If Eagle County was communicating anything with the public in Spanish through any medium, chances are he scripted it and was behind the camera or keyboard facilitating it.

Once we were given the green light to re-open recreation in May, Eddie was back working hard at Mountain Rec to let the community know we were here for them as the first large-scale recreation center to re-open in the state.

It wasn’t long before Eddie joined forces with the Emergency Operations Center again, except this time it was for the Grizzly Creek Fire. Over the course of about two weeks, he fired up his Latino outreach efforts once again to ensure the Latino community received life-saving information.

It amazed me how he put community first every chance he had in 2020. He didn’t do it to win awards, or gain public praise, he did it because he loves Eagle County. As an immigrant from Mexico, he has never felt like he fully belongs in either Mexican or American culture, but he belongs in Eagle County and is proud to call this place home. We’re darn happy you call this place home too, Eddie!

His experiences in 2020 made him see a need for bilingual and bicultural marketing and communications to bridge the Latino and Anglo communities in Eagle County. In the fall of 2020, he started his own consulting firm, Calle 98, focused on addressing this need.

I’m not sure if you remember what you were doing when you were 28, but I can say without a doubt, it was nothing close to what Eddie has done. He inspires me daily and has values that I can only aspire to have one day. I can’t wait to see what he does next.

He says it best.

Hace 15 meses ya que la vida cambió como la conocíamos. El mundo entero estaba descubriendo cómo manejar la pandemia de COVID-19, y nuestra comunidad no fue la excepción. En tiempos de crisis, los líderes naturales están a la altura de las circunstancias, y Eduardo ‘Eddie’ Campos es uno de esos líderes naturales, razón por la cual ganó el premio al Joven Profesional del Año 2020 del Vail Valley Partnership.

Algunos podrán preguntarse cómo un gerente de comunicación y marketing de Mountain Recreation jugó un papel en la respuesta de nuestra comunidad ante la pandemia, y la respuesta es breve y dulce: porque es realmente bueno en su profesión.

Lo recuerdo como si fuera ayer. El 13 de marzo fue el primer día en que se cerraron todos los programas e instalaciones de Mountain Recreation. Caminaba por el Centro de Recreación de Gypsum inquietantemente silencioso y me llamó Angelo Fernández, subdirector del Condado de Eagle. Necesitaban la ayuda de Eddie para llegar a la población Latina con información vital sobre la pandemia. Le dije que, si Eddie estaba dispuesto a hacerlo, también estaríamos de acuerdo. ¿Por qué? Porque creemos que todos merecen estar sanos y felices.

Y así, Eddie comenzó a trabajar arduamente. Durante tres meses dejó Mountain Rec temporalmente y fue a trabajar jornadas completas en el Centro de Operaciones de Emergencia (EOC). Eddie coordinó con más de 70 socios comunitarios, realizó compras publicitarias en medios, desarrolló mensajes biculturales y bilingües, gestionó las relaciones públicas y actuó como un portavoz confiable interactuando con canales locales y estatales (incluyendo a Telemundo y Univisión). Si el Condado de Eagle comunicó algo con el público en español a través de cualquier medio, es probable que él lo haya escrito y que haya estado detrás de cámaras o del teclado facilitando la comunicación.

Una vez que nos dieron luz verde para reabrir los programas de recreación en mayo, Eddie volvió a trabajar duro en Mountain Rec para que la comunidad supiera que estábamos aquí para ellos, siendo el primer centro de recreación a gran escala que reabrió en el estado.

No pasó mucho tiempo antes de que Eddie uniera fuerzas con el Centro de Operaciones de Emergencia nuevamente, excepto que esta vez fue debido al Incendio de Grizzly Creek. En el transcurso de dos semanas, reactivó sus esfuerzos de difusión y comunicación para asegurarse de que la comunidad latina recibiera información crítica que podría salvar sus vidas.

Me asombró su manera de poner a la comunidad en primer lugar en cada oportunidad que tuvo durante el 2020. No lo hizo para ganar premios u obtener elogios del público, lo hizo porque ama al Condado de Eagle. Como inmigrante de México, Eddie nunca se ha sentido como si perteneciera plenamente a la cultura mexicana ni a la estadounidense, pero pertenece al Condado de Eagle y se enorgullece de llamar a este lugar su hogar. ¡Nosotros también nos alegramos de que llames hogar a este lugar, Eddie!

Sus experiencias en el 2020 le hicieron ver la necesidad de comunicación y marketing bilingües y biculturales para promover la unión entre las comunidades latinas y anglosajonas en el Condado de Eagle. En el otoño de 2020, comenzó su propia compañía de consultoría, Calle 98, enfocada en satisfacer esta necesidad.

No estoy seguro si usted recordará lo que estaba haciendo cuando tenía 28, pero puedo decir sin lugar a duda que no se parece en nada a lo que ha hecho Eddie. Me inspira a diario y tiene valores que solo puedo aspirar a tener un día. No puedo esperar a ver qué hace en el futuro.

Él lo dice mejor:

“Como hijo de inmigrantes, conozco los sacrificios monumentales que hicieron mis padres para asegurar mi futuro, y simplemente no soy quién para renunciar o malgastar aquello por lo que trabajaron tan duro. Creo en superar mis límites todos los días. Está en mi naturaleza perseverar”. – Eduardo Campos.
